Have you ever wondered just how many snakes you could find in a single day? Well, that’s exactly what I set out to discover during a recent adventure into the wild. Armed with nothing but my camera, a good pair of boots, and an insatiable curiosity, my friends and I ventured deep into snake territory, eager to see if we could find 100 snakes in just one day.
The day started early, with the sun barely rising over the horizon. We chose a popular wildlife reserve known for its diverse snake population, from harmless garter snakes to the more intimidating rattlesnakes. Our goal wasn’t just to spot as many snakes as possible but to observe them in their natural habitat, respecting their space and behaviors.

We kicked off the hunt by scouring the forest floor, lifting rocks and logs, and peering into crevices where snakes are often found during the day. The first few finds were easy—garter snakes slithering through the underbrush, soaking up the warmth of the morning sun. As we moved along, it became clear that some areas were teeming with life. A large brush pile yielded several small snakes, all different species, basking and waiting for the sun to warm their cold-blooded bodies.
As the morning wore on, we encountered more and more snakes—Eastern Gophersnakes, King Snakes, and even a few Copperheads. The excitement was palpable. But with each snake we found, it was clear that hitting 100 wouldn’t be as simple as we first thought. Snakes are often well camouflaged, and even when you know they’re in the area, they can be hard to spot.

By midday, we were seeing a mix of juvenile snakes and adults, some coiled up, others basking, and a few moving through the tall grasses. The variety of species was incredible, and while some of the snakes were small and harmless, we encountered a couple of larger, more cautious ones—like the Timber Rattlesnake. We made sure to give these snakes a wide berth and always prioritized their safety and our own.
After a long afternoon, we were closing in on the 100 mark, but the hunt wasn’t over yet. As the sun began to dip lower in the sky, we found several more hidden among the rocks near a riverbank. The temperature was perfect for snake activity, and we were finding them at a rapid pace.
Finally, just before sunset, we hit 100! By the end of the day, we had documented 103 snakes, from the tiniest hatchlings to full-grown adults, and it was an experience I’ll never forget. It was a reminder of just how diverse and fascinating these creatures are, and how important it is to respect their role in the ecosystem.
While we didn’t intend to disturb the snakes or their environment, the sheer number of encounters was a testament to the abundance of wildlife in these areas. Snakes play a critical role in controlling rodent populations and maintaining a healthy balance in nature. As we wrapped up the day, we made sure to leave the area as undisturbed as possible, always keeping in mind that these creatures were just doing what snakes do best—living their lives in the wild.

So, yes—finding 100 snakes in a day is possible, but it’s more than just a numbers game. It’s about appreciation for these incredible reptiles and the ecosystems they inhabit. Who knows what we’ll find next time, but this snake-hunting adventure will certainly be one for the books!
