Rock lobster fishing is not for the faint of heart—it’s a high-intensity, fast-paced job that requires skill, precision, and a bit of luck. On this trip, we set out on a commercial lobster fishing expedition, and what happened next was nothing short of incredible.
The early morning sea was calm, with the sun just beginning to rise as we prepared our gear. The traps had been set the night before in prime lobster territory, and we were eager to see what kind of haul we’d pull in. Commercial lobster fishing is all about efficiency—every second counts when you’re out on the water.

As we approached the first trap, anticipation built. The crew worked in perfect sync, using a hydraulic winch to pull up the heavy pot from the depths. Within seconds, the first trap breached the surface, and it was LOADED—massive rock lobsters, their spiny legs scrambling against each other, packed inside.
With swift hands, we emptied the trap onto the sorting table and immediately reset it. The lobsters were weighed, sorted, and measured in record time—every legal-sized catch went into the holding tank, while undersized or egg-bearing females were carefully released back into the water.
Trap after trap, the haul kept getting better. The lobsters were huge, some weighing over 2 kilos each. In just three minutes, we had pulled in a staggering 25 kilos of premium rock lobster—a haul that would fetch a serious price on the market.

This is what makes commercial lobster fishing so intense. The window for a successful catch is short, and conditions can change fast. But when everything lines up—the right location, perfect timing, and a skilled crew—it results in a massive payday.
After a few more pulls, the tanks were filling up, and we knew this trip was going to be one for the books. The sheer speed and precision of the operation made it an unforgettable experience—one that proved why commercial rock lobster fishing is both an art and a science.
One thing’s for sure: 25 kilos in 3 minutes is a catch most fishermen can only dream of!
