How Did I Become a Goldfish Breeder? (Luke’s Goldies Origin Story)

It all started with one goldfish. Just one.

I had no intention of becoming a full-blown goldfish breeder. In fact, if you had told me a few years ago that I’d be knee-deep in water changes, genetics charts, and tiny fish with ridiculous head growths, I would’ve laughed. But here we are.

Let me explain.

The First Fish That Changed Everything

Like many unsuspecting people, I walked into a pet store one day and saw a tank full of those cute little goldfish. They looked so simple to take care of. Just a little bowl, a sprinkle of food, and boom—lifelong fish buddy.

I was so, so wrong.

But I didn’t know that yet. So, I picked one, named it something dumb (probably “Goldie”), and took it home.

The Downward Spiral (or Upward, Depending on Perspective)

Fast-forward a few weeks, and I had learned things. I found out that goldfish don’t belong in bowls. They need huge tanks, strong filtration, and actual care. Suddenly, I was knee-deep in research, watching every YouTube video and reading every forum post about proper goldfish care.

And that’s when I made my first mistake: I got another one.

And then another.

And another.

And before I knew it? I had a whole tank full of fancy goldfish.

Accidental Breeding 101

One day, I wake up to find my fish acting weird. The males are chasing the females like they just had five shots of espresso. The plants and decorations? Covered in tiny, jelly-like eggs.

I panic. Google some stuff. And realize—oh no, I have baby goldfish on the way.

At first, I tried to leave them alone, thinking nature will handle it. But then I found out that goldfish are the worst parents ever. They eat their own eggs. Zero parental instincts.

So now I’m scooping eggs into separate tanks, setting up hatcheries, and watching as tiny goldfish fry wiggle their way into existence. I was in too deep.

Luke’s Goldies is Born

Somewhere between my hundredth water change and my fiftieth baby goldfish, I realized—I might as well go all in.

I started learning about goldfish genetics, selective breeding, and how to raise the best quality fish. I started filming my journey, showing people the chaotic but rewarding world of goldfish keeping. And somehow, other people actually found it interesting.

And now? Here I am, running Luke’s Goldies, breeding beautiful fish, and helping people learn how to properly care for these little aquatic weirdos.

All because of one goldfish.

Moral of the story? Never underestimate how deep a hobby can go. And if you ever think, Hey, I’ll just get one goldfish…
